More recently, Canon has promised camera owners that new features will be added more regularly to its latest cameras. The EOS R5 and R6, for example, have received several updates within the first six months, enabling extra features for video and flash.
In addition, the loader software isn't set up to go hunting through your Compact Flash card for the firmware file. It looks only in the top or root directory of your card, so that's where you must copy the firmware you download. Once you've determined that a new firmware update is available for your camera and that you want to install it, just follow these steps. (If you chicken out, any Canon Service Center can install the firmware upgrade for you.)
Canon 40d Firmware Update 2.0
1. Download the firmware from Canon (you'll find it in the Downloads section of the Support portion of Canon's website) and place it on your computer's hard drive. The firmware is contained in a self-extracting file for either Windows or Mac OS. It will have a name such as 40D00104.fir.
4. Insert the CF card in the camera and then turn the camera on. Press Menu and scroll to Firmware Ver. x.x.x in the Set-up menu and press the Set button. Choose OK and press the Set button to begin loading the update program.
Use a fully charged battery or Canon's optional ACK-E2 AC adapter kit to ensure that you'll have enough power to operate the camera for the entire upgrade. Moreover, you should not turn off the camera while your old firmware is being overwritten. Don't open the Compact Flash card door or do anything else that might disrupt operation of the 40D while the firmware is being installed.
A pro chimes in with his long-term impressions of DJI's Mavic 3. While there were ups and downs, filmmaker José Fransisco Salgado found that in his use of the drone, firmware updates have made it better with every passing month.
Initially, Adobe Lightroom did not have official support for the 40D though RAW and JPEGs from the camera did still work. Official support for the 40D as well as the 1Ds Mark III was added with Lightroom 1.3, available as a free update from Adobe.
I'd not rush to judge it being to do w/firmware V2. Are you sure it's not the microphone? Some are not compatible, and the sampling frequency for V2 I noticed changed up to 48khz(for better highs i presume). Who knows what else they changed, so even if it worked w/firmware 1.2.5 that's a possibility. I haven't tried the external mike I used successfully before w/my 7D on the new V2 yet - maybe I should!
Thanks Canon, for using your "unprecedented" firmware update 2.0 to make my 7D useless for an external mike & decent audio like before. My plans to purchase any future Canon products such as a 5D MkIII and various lenses are on hold.....until this basic & unacceptable issue is corrected. I've been enjoying the other V2 features, but this is ridiculous.
More strange is the fact both the 60D & 5D MkII (which added it later in firmware too) have this feature without issue. I'm shocked the oversight of Canon to release an update without catching this basic flaw, and worse still to date haven't released a fix.
Yes please let us know any word from Canon. Forgot to update I tested mine w/Azden mike and having same issues - used before w/firmware 1.2.3 none. Canon should step up & address this issue, not just when 7D's are shutting off. It's being clearly shown the same mike plugged in their other cameras isn't creating the same issue? Heck even plugging in a dead cable causes the noise?!!
I'd think if it was as simple as something different about the 7D's hardware/architecture requiring different spec mikes w/newest firmware they'd just tell us. Ridiculous as it sounds, somehow I can't help wondering if the 7D's unique config needed a separate effort vs just pasting the same feature from the 60D/5DMk3(if that's what they did) and this is why nothing is being said. Seems if the new firmware just needed different mikes they would just tell us?
History. Canon's EOS SLR system is the oldest and still the largest lens line where the focus motor is built into the lens itself, with no mechanical coupling between the lens and camera body. Other lines, like Nikon, Pentax, and Minolta/Sony, have a mixture of "screw-drive" lenses and electronically coupled lenses. Dating back to 1987, the EOS (Electro-Optical System) line has a huge and growing selection of lenses, some of which Canon has recently updated to meet the greater demands of digital imaging technology.
Unfortunately, downloading them is quite a hassle (sometimes you have to click through 5 pages to get to the download button, sometimes you have to type in the serial number of your camera etc.), so for easier accessibility here are direct links to most of the currently available firmware updates:
The updates themselves are encrypted so they can't be directly analysed with IDA Pro. AFAIK there is no universal decrypter, but some decryption/unpacking tools which may or may not work are available from here:
When will the canon webcam software for mac OS Catalina be available? I have not been able to use my dslr for zoom meetings. I understand there are alternate third party softwares like camera live but, I find there is a lag in transfer. For example, when I speak into the dslr , my voice and body are not real time. Please help!
X10 Firmware Update Ver.1.02 The firmware (Ver.1.00-Ver.1.01 to Ver.1.02) update incorporates the following issues.1. Just in the following camera procedure, aperture value was incorrectly displayed as "F2.2" even if actual value was set to "F2.0". This phenomenon is improved.(1) Mode dial is set to [A] or [M] (2) Aperture is set to F2.0 (open aperture). (3) Zoom lens position is moved from wide edge to telephoto edge, and finally to wide edge, again. 2. In the TRACKING mode, the AF hunting occurs, which you can see coming in focus and out of focus continuously in the LCD monitor. This occurs in the two cases below.(1) Turn on the camera to select "TRACKING" in AF mode(shooting menu) and change to shooting mode by half-pressing the shutter button.(If changing to shooting mode by pressing "DISP/BACK" button, this cannot occur.) (2) Turn off and on the camera while "TRACKING" mode.(If turning on and off after changing to EXR mode, this cannot occur.)
